MORE ON THE ABBOTT FIRING. Susan Ryan-Vollmar, writing in Bay Windows, observes that Katherine Abbott is the second lesbian to be fired by Governor Mitt Romney after getting married. Ryan-Vollmar wants to know: was this about snow, or about Romney's ongoing campaign to suck up to the religious right in advance of the 2008 presidential campaign?

Why can't it be both? Isn't that every politican's dream?

While I know nothing of the man himself, I would imagine that he personally dislikes homosexuality but no so much that he broods on it daily and it's a driving force in his decisions or anything. I suspect his public denouncement of it is about 95% politics. For example, notice how quiet Dick Cheney gets whenever Dubya starts talking about a Constitutional amendment? I suspect he hates that amendment and would love to say so, but his silence is 95% politics.

And what's all this talk about Romney running for President? It's the dumbest idea I've ever heard. Okay, sure, Romney's ego - like any political figure - loves the idea. But look at history: Swift was deemed so awful by her party she wasn't even allowed to run. Weld and Celucci had to squeak like mice just to go after near-worthless ambassadorships. Not exactly a stirring precedent. Plus we're 0 for 2 in Massachusetts presidential candidates in the last 40 years, and Romney, sir, is no Jack Kennedy. :-)

If Romney ever runs he will (rightly or wrongly) never get past the label of the governor of that ultra-liberal state that saw gay marriage start on his watch. He just doesn't have the Jesusland street cred.
